MODULE 3:
CYBERBULLYING & SOCIAL MEDIA
Cyberbullying, which can also be referred to as online bullying, is a fast growing issue in schools today. It can be defined as the use of teachnology, including the internet or apps on smartphones, as a means of deliberately hurting someone else. Talking to any educator, watching the news or following popular social media sites we are can hear many stories of instances where technology has been an amazing tool to extend the learning and knowledge of anybody in or out of school today but also in showing off these acquired skills. On the other hand, we are reminded constantly of the damage that it can cause people and their reputations. It isn't difficult to become aware of what a prevalent issue cyberbullying is today. Because cyberbullying is rooted in technology, bullying is now known to occur more often outside of the school, including the privacy of family homes. The new ethical battle teachers are facing is where the boundaries are for this terrible act before it becomes the responsibility of the teacher to step in. Technology has only just begun reaching out to school aged children and is showing no sign of slowing down soon. This means that up-and-coming teachers will face this battle too. We might as well start preparing now!

Because the topic of not only Cyberbullying but also building ourselves an ethical digital footprint is so prevalent today, it doesn't serve us well, as parents or as teachers, to just have read up and have heard stories on the topic. We need to know how to stop the damage that is done to our students by being prepared to teach it and model it for our students at a young age. I have created a lesson plan based on what I know so far to show what this might look like in my classroom one day.
This week, in our third module, we spent time exploring Digital Citizenship & Cyberbullying. I used a Pinterest board to link some of my ideas, found resources, thought provoking videos as well as statistic and information surrounding the subject. I have been using this site for a long time now and have been fortunate enough to find some teachers that I know from my practicum experience. They have pinned some really awesome resources that I can access and share again for my peers, colleagues and friends with children to think about and hopefully find helpful.
